Logistics Hub UK Partnership Backs Doncaster’s Bid for the HS2 Rail College

Tuesday, 20 May 2014

Logistics Hub UK, a partnership of leading private-sector companies and public sector organisations, is committed to the on-going growth and development of the logistics sector in Doncaster and the wider Sheffield City Region.

That is why Logistics Hub UK strongly backs Doncaster’s bid for the HS2 Rail College, which will build on the town’s impressive rail heritage - a heritage that includes the construction of two of the most iconic locomotives in the world, the Mallard and The Flying Scotsman.

With a unique cluster of rail engineering companies already based in Doncaster, such as Unipart, Wabtec, Volkerrail and DB Schenker, not to mention Hitachi, which has recently announced a £70m rail maintenance depot, it is clear that Doncaster has a compelling case to support its bid for the HS2 Rail College.

With Doncaster’s exceptional 360-degree logistics offer, including the airport, the East Coast Mainline, and FARRRS, as well as a central location at the heart of the UK, it is clear that the natural home for the HS2 Rail College is Doncaster.

Phil Harris, Deputy Chair of the Sheffield City Region LEP Logistics Sector Group, said: “Alongside other game changing infrastructure projects such as the airport, FARRRS and the Railport, the HS2 Rail College has the potential to transform not only Doncaster but the wider Sheffield City Region. The college will provide the necessary platform to enable the region to meet the increase in demand for highly skilled labour for the rail sector. Ultimately, this will create the jobs required to support long-term sustainable growth for businesses in Doncaster and the wider region.”
