iPort Attracting Big Names

Wednesday 21 December 2016

We’ve held a number of events this year that have brought people together to discuss topics including skills and education in logistics. Here we heard from Mike Hughes, CEO of Verdion, who has developed an inland port in Doncaster. He told the group why he chose to locate in the Sheffield City Region: “This region had the availability, it had the infrastructure and importantly it had the ambition.”

The iPort has already attracted big names including Amazon, Fellowes and CEVA and with the rail freight project on the horizon, it will continue to create jobs for people living in the area.

“We need to be looking at supply chain trends, identifying new growth industries such as life sciences and digital industries and ensuring that the local work force is geared up to meet the needs of the employers in these sectors,” added Mike.
Our construction in logistics event looked at the impact of Brexit, the benefits of the Sheffield City Region as a logistics hub and the systems and processes necessary for construction companies to succeed in today’s economy and back in June, logistics companies from across the Sheffield City Region were told that they are one of the most exciting prospects in the country today.
Keynote speaker at that event, Rob Bell, from Archomai, told the group that if they start to look at the global perspective and form strong supply chains then they are ‘one of the most exciting prospects in the country’.
He said: “Supply chains compete, not companies. The strength of your offer as a region is the strength of your supply chain. The logistics effort is THE story for the Sheffield City Region because that is where we link into supply chains globally.
“We need to start seeing the North as an interconnected gateway and focus on trade corridors and our multi model offer.

“It is an exciting time for the logistics industry and the region is making huge progress in its connectivity.”
