Construction work has started on the infrastructure which will open up a major development site at Capitol Park in Goole with the potential to create up to 4,000 jobs.

In August, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) appointed Lagan Construction Group to build the access road to the park which will be home to about 1.25 million sq ft of factories and warehouses to the west of the port.

The HCA is investing up to £13m at the site over the next two years, with support from the European Regional Development Fund.

Rob Pearson, head of area at the HCA, said: "The start of work on the new road is fantastic news for the local economy – it will help create employment for the town and the wider community for many years to come.

"This 40 hectare site will provide a range of opportunities for companies to locate in Goole with excellent connections to the Port and the motorway network. We will continue to invest in Capitol Park for the next five years working with our partners to help create sustainable jobs for local people."

The work, which will take 16 months to complete, and Lagan has committed to work with local businesses wherever possible.

Lord Haskins, chairman of the Humber LEP, said: "Work starting on site is not just great news for Goole, with huge potential for new jobs created by opening up the development land and creating better links between the port and the M62, but for the connectivity of the Humber as a whole adding to the ports and logistics offer in the region."
